MULHOUSE tells its story through its heritage…

The streets of the old town center, the Rhenish Renaissance Town Hall, and several houses recall the small, independent republic. The extraordinary industrial saga of the « City of a hundred chimneys » has left us factories, workers’ housing projects, large employers’ residences, and the first remarkable gardens. The political vicissitudes the city has experienced, are reflected in the barracks, the style of certain public buildings, the commemorative monuments, and the achievements of municipal socialism and the Reconstruction period after 1945.
The « Trente Glorieuses » (the post-war boom) and the era of deindustrialization have also left their mark on certain neighborhoods. Over the centuries, a multitude of cultural and architectural influences has shaped a varied and unique urban landscape where each location evokes and embodies an aspect of Mulhouse’s unique character.
